FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono has broken his silence following a collision with opposing striker Jesús de Miguel that resulted in de Miguel's death. Owono expressed his "enormous pain" and stated his intention to "face whatever comes" after police opened a homicide investigation into the incident.
The collision occurred during a heated 2-2 draw in Spain's second division on Monday. De Miguel collapsed immediately after Owono's knee appeared to strike his chest. He passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Owono has since shut down his Instagram account amid backlash, including chants of "murderer" from opposing fans. He issued a statement through his club, FC Andorra, conveying his grief.
"These are being the most difficult days of my life," Owono said. "I am struggling to find the words and find it very difficult to assimilate anything that has happened. I feel an enormous pain for the loss of Jesús. I think of him, his family, and everyone who loved him."
FC Andorra stated that the club remains "deeply affected by the death of Jesús de Miguel" and requested "utmost sensitivity and respect." A minute's silence was held at the club's training ground.
The incident has ignited debate surrounding challenges between goalkeepers and outfield players. Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares suggested Owono used "excessive force" but also explained that goalkeepers often use their knees defensively and that momentum can cause them to rise during challenges.
FC Andorra defender Lautaro Spatz also defended Owono, describing him as "deeply affected" and emphasizing that the goalkeeper "would never intend to hurt anyone."
Police are investigating the circumstances of de Miguel's death, which automatically triggers a judicial inquiry as it did not result from natural causes. The probe is examining the emergency medical response, including questions about whether de Miguel received oxygen or if a defibrillator was used promptly. Medical personnel involved are expected to be questioned.
While legal experts anticipate the investigation may not lead to criminal charges against Owono due to the open-play nature of the collision, he is expected to face a lengthy ban. De Miguel, a 30-year-old father of one, died at Nuestra Senora Candelaria University Hospital after his condition worsened, according to his club.
