The San Francisco Giants initiated their trade deadline activity by sending veteran starting pitcher Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night. In return, the Braves acquired right-handed pitcher Anthony Molina. This transaction signals a potential sell-off for the Giants, who are currently having a disappointing season.

Mahle, 31, has posted a 3-9 record with a 5.13 earned run average over 18 starts for the Giants this season. However, he has shown improved performance in July, with a 2-1 record and a 2.82 ERA in that month, including a shutout performance against the Brewers. He will join a Braves rotation that currently includes Chris Sale, JR Ritchie, Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder, and Martin Pérez.

The Braves hope Mahle can bolster their rotation as they aim to maintain their lead in the NL East and compete for the best record in the National League. Mahle could be one of several Giants players traded before the deadline on Monday at 6 p.m.

Other Giants players whose names have been mentioned in trade discussions include pitcher Robbie Ray and infielder Luis Arraez. The Giants, under first-year manager Tony Vitello, have a 47-55 record and are 12 games out of a playoff spot, with several veteran players on their roster.

Molina, the pitcher acquired by the Giants, has a 3.78 ERA and a 4.14 FIP in minor league play this season, with 53 strikeouts and 20 walks in 52.1 innings, primarily at the Triple-A level.
