The San Francisco Giants were significant players at the Major League Baseball trade deadline, acquiring eight new prospects to bolster their farm system. The team moved several players, including Luis Arraez, Robbie Ray, and Heliot Ramos, in exchange for a haul of young talent.
Among the notable acquisitions is second baseman Marcelo Mayer, who was once considered one of the Boston Red Sox's top prospects. The Giants acquired Mayer, 23, from Boston for left-handed pitcher Erik Miller and minor league outfielder Carlos Gutierrez. Mayer has struggled with injuries and consistency in his major league debut, but San Francisco's president, Buster Posey, expressed confidence in the team's ability to help him regain his previous form.
"We feel like [we] can get him back on track to where he was trending a couple of years ago," Posey stated. Mayer, who can play shortstop, second base, and third base, is recovering from a stress reaction and is expected to receive an extended opportunity at second base upon his return.
The Giants also strengthened their pitching depth by acquiring right-handed pitcher Ramon Marquez from the Philadelphia Phillies. Marquez, 20, was acquired along with right-handed pitcher Marty Gair in exchange for Arraez and pitcher Caleb Kilian. Posey highlighted Marquez, a fringe top-100 prospect, as a potential future top-of-the-rotation starter. Marquez has shown a mid-90s fastball and a changeup described as one of the best in the minors.
Left-handed pitcher Henry Lalane, 22, was another key pitching acquisition, coming from the New York Yankees in a deal that sent outfielder Heliot Ramos to New York. Lalane, who has dealt with shoulder surgery in recent seasons, has a mid-90s fastball and promising offspeed pitches, and is viewed as an upside starting pitcher.
Right-handed pitcher Miguel Mendez, 24, was acquired from the San Diego Padres for left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray and cash. Mendez, who has touched 100 mph with his fastball, could be a bullpen candidate for the Giants. He is scheduled for a thorough examination by the Giants' medical staff.
Rounding out the acquisitions are infielder Joniel Hernandez, 17, also from San Diego in the deal for Ray. Hernandez signed for a $1.4 million bonus and is considered to have high offensive upside. Infielder Kaeden Kent, 22, was acquired from the Yankees along with Lalane. Kent, whose father is in the Hall of Fame, has shown contact ability from the left side.
Right-handed pitcher Marty Gair, 23, was acquired from Philadelphia with Marquez. He possesses a fastball that can reach 102 mph. Right-handed pitcher Anthony Molina, 24, was acquired from the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Tyler Mahle. Molina, who struggled in limited major league innings, particularly in hitter-friendly environments, will report to Triple-A Sacramento.
