George Russell secured an unexpected pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix, producing a "magic lap" in the final qualifying session.

Russell had been trailing contender Antonelli through the initial qualifying stages but found a significant improvement in the third session. He finished second fastest by a mere 0.043 seconds before executing a decisive final lap. "It's one of those, when you nail Turn One and you go through fast, but the car doesn't slide, it keeps the [tyre] temperatures a little bit down, so the tyres are cooler approaching the next turn, and then you have more grip, you go through there faster, and the tyres are cooler once again," Russell explained, describing an "upward spiral" that led to his performance.

This pole position marks a significant turnaround for Russell, who has faced a challenging period in the championship. Following the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this month, he fell to 68 points behind Antonelli after a penalty relegated him from third to 12th. This was preceded by a retirement from the lead in Canada, struggles with pace in Miami, and other unfavorable circumstances in earlier races. The only recent positive turn of luck for Russell came in the previous race in Spain, where Antonelli retired after passing Russell for second place behind Lewis Hamilton's winning Ferrari.

Antonelli acknowledged that even if he had not slowed during his lap, he likely would not have beaten Russell's time. "He would have been a little bit ahead but it would have been front row," Antonelli stated. Russell, however, was still surprised by the outcome, especially after encountering a single yellow flag in the final sector. "I did a hundred-metre lift, lost a huge amount of time and still, you know… I don't know. I don't have the answer," he said. "For sure I'll be looking with my team where it came from, but it felt very sweet."
