San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has indicated he is nearing a return from a ruptured Achilles injury, expressing optimism about being ready for the team's Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
"Body feels really good. It's bounced back really good. I'd say I've really taken a step back towards playing," Kittle told reporters regarding his recovery progress. The seven-time Pro Bowler, however, remains uncertain about his exact workload and will determine his playing status closer to the game.
Kittle suffered the injury during the Wild Card round of the playoffs last season. The typical recovery timeline for a ruptured Achilles ranges from nine to twelve months, but Kittle has been focused on returning within an eight-month window, aiming for the season opener.
His dedication to rehabilitation has been noted by teammates. Quarterback Brock Purdy described watching Kittle work his way back as "remarkable," while fellow tight end Kyle Juszczyk called it "incredible." Juszczyk recounted Kittle's commitment, mentioning early mornings and late nights dedicated to his recovery, even while the team was traveling.
Last month, Kittle was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List, signaling a significant step in his return, and he has since been participating in drills during practice.
Earlier in his recovery, six months after the injury, Kittle shared a video of himself deadlifting over 665 pounds at his home in Tennessee, highlighting his intense training regimen. The 49ers are currently in Melbourne, Australia, preparing for their season opener.
