Former England and Tottenham star Gary Mabbutt has been hospitalized in South Africa following a serious accident that occurred on the eve of England's World Cup semi-final match against Argentina. Mabbutt, 64, is being treated for a large blood clot in his calf, according to a statement from his former teammate and friend Micky Hazard.

Mabbutt will remain in South Africa until at least July 24, as he is currently unable to fly due to his condition. Hazard shared the news on Facebook, urging well-wishers to send their support to Mabbutt, also known as 'Mabsy.'

Mabbutt, who earned 16 caps for England, has a history of health issues. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 17 and has previously stated he has limited sensation in his feet due to his diabetes and career injuries. In 2017, he underwent major heart surgery after experiencing chest pains and breathlessness.

Mabbutt enjoyed a lengthy career, making 601 appearances for Tottenham before retiring in 1998. Tottenham has been in contact with Mabbutt following the incident, Sky Sports reported.
