Two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup champion Galopin Des Champs has died following an accident in a field, occurring just days after his retirement from racing.

The 10-year-old gelding sustained a severe injury to his near front leg, which veterinarians determined could not be repaired, according to a statement from Ruby Walsh.

"Sadly Galopin Des Champs suffered an injury in his field this morning and could not be saved," Walsh said. "He was attended to by our vets immediately but x-rays revealed extensive unrepairable damage."

Galopin Des Champs, a popular figure in recent racing history, secured victory in 12 Grade One races. His triumphs at the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2023 and 2024 solidified his status, though he finished second in the 2025 renewal and was unable to compete for a third consecutive win due to injury. His final race was a third-place finish in the Irish Gold Cup in February.

Trainer Willie Mullins had announced the horse's retirement the previous week, citing that the gelding would not be able to perform at his accustomed high level. Mullins had expressed hope for a successful second career for Galopin Des Champs as a sport horse.

Walsh paid tribute to the horse, noting the heartbreak his death would cause to those who cared for him, including Greg, Audrey, and Sarah Turley, and Adam Connolly.
