Joe Riley, who joined Manchester United's academy at the age of six, has reflected on his journey through professional football and his subsequent career change. Riley played alongside notable talents such as Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, and Dean Henderson during his time in the club's youth system.
His senior debut came in February 2016 under manager Louis van Gaal. Riley started in a Europa League match against FC Midtjylland at Old Trafford, a game where Rashford also made his senior breakthrough. The team was depleted due to injuries to key players like Wayne Rooney and David de Gea, facing a deficit from the first leg.
"I remember thinking: 'Oh my God'. It was a dream come true," Riley recalled about seeing his name in the starting lineup. He played 79 minutes in the match, which United won 5-1 to advance in the competition.
Despite his promising start, Riley's first-team opportunities at United were limited. While Rashford continued to feature and went on to win the FA Cup that season, Riley did not make another senior appearance. He continued to train with the first team and was named captain of the under-23s, but injuries began to impact his career.
A hamstring injury delayed a loan move to Sheffield United, and a subsequent shoulder dislocation cut short his time at Bramall Lane.
Riley's 15-year association with Manchester United concluded in May 2018. While Rashford was preparing for the World Cup with England, Riley signed a two-year contract with League One club Bradford City.
Now, ten years after playing with Rashford in the youth teams, Riley has transitioned to a new career and stated that he does not miss full-time football. Additional details about his post-playing career were not provided.
