Former NSW and Australian rugby league star Trent Merrin has been charged over his alleged involvement in an illicit peptide syndicate, following a police raid on a home south of Wollongong. Merrin, 37, was arrested at Surry Hills Police Station on Tuesday morning after an investigation by organised crime detectives and the Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Police allege they discovered a clandestine peptide manufacturing facility and significant quantities of restricted substances at a residential property in Shell Cove. Merrin faces five counts of manufacturing goods for use in humans resulting in harm or injury, and one count of participating in a criminal group and contributing to criminal activity.

Merrin's solicitor, Paul McGirr, told News Corp that the former footballer intends to plead not guilty, stating, "It’s unclear what his alleged role in the syndicate is. From what I can read there’s nothing linking his DNA or profile to any of the peptides." Merrin was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear at Wollongong Local Court on November 24.

The charges stem from an investigation by the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, which established Strike Force Antree in July to look into the alleged illegal manufacture, supply, and distribution of peptides. Officers executed a search warrant at the Shell Cove property on July 24, reportedly finding the manufacturing operation and restricted substances. Merrin was initially arrested on August 14 and charged with four counts of manufacturing goods for use in humans resulting in harm or injury, before further inquiries led to his additional charges on November 3.

Merrin had a distinguished NRL career, retiring five years ago. He debuted for the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2009, helping them win the premiership in 2010 and the World Club Challenge in 2011. He also represented NSW in 13 State of Origin matches between 2011 and 2015 and played for the Australian Test side.
