Zeph Thomas, a 36-year-old winger, has established himself as one of football's most itinerant players, having made an extraordinary 39 moves across five countries in 18 years. His nomadic career path included stints at numerous clubs such as Rossington Main, Mickleover Sports, Frickley Athletic, Garden City Broncbusters in the United States, Montegnee in Belgium, and Thunder Bay Chill in Canada.
Thomas has played for a long list of English clubs including Cowdenbeath, Boston United, Harrogate Town, Scarborough Athletic, Stafford Rangers, Leek Town, Ilkeston Town, Matlock Town, Goole, Glossop North End, Stocksbridge Park Steels, Brighouse Town, Emley, Harrogate Railway Athletic, Sheffield, Shaw Lane, Belper Town, Parkgate, Campion, Eccleshill United, Selby Town, and Ossett United. He noted his willingness to move if he did not receive what he considered fair compensation, stating, "If I didn't get the money I thought I deserved, I'd be off."
However, Thomas's extensive travels may now be behind him. Since being appointed player-manager of ninth-tier club Dearne & District in 2024, he has embraced his new role. The club, based in Goldthorpe near Barnsley, secured promotion to the Northern Counties East League First Division last season. They are set to play their first-ever FA Cup match on Saturday, visiting Runcorn Town. This marks a significant progression for the team, which was playing in the Doncaster Saturday League as recently as 2021.
"We've gone from being in the Doncaster Saturday League in 2021 to playing in the FA Cup," Thomas said. "It's massive for the area because they have never seen this team play in the competition."
