FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Argentina's football association and its players for multiple alleged violations during the World Cup. These proceedings encompass actions such as the display of a banner asserting sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, discriminatory chants and gestures, and security protocol failures.
The organization stated that using a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations potentially breaches its disciplinary code. This is not the first instance of disciplinary action for such displays; FIFA fined Argentina in 2014 for a similar banner related to the Falklands, referred to as Las Malvinas in Argentina.
Further allegations include late kickoffs, inappropriate messages from team personnel and spectators, and objects thrown by fans across various matches throughout the tournament. Proceedings have also been opened against several players following the final match, where Spain defeated Argentina. A brawl occurred at the end of the game when Argentina's Leandro Paredes pushed Spain's Gavi, an incident that drew condemnations from the opposing team's celebrating substitutes.
Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes faces three assault charges, while Nahuel Molina faces two. Molina, along with teammates Thiago Almada and official Roberto Ayala, are subject to one count each for unsporting behavior, as is Spain's Gavi. FIFA has informed the involved parties of the charges and provided an opportunity to present their positions before a decision is made by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
