Kobie Turner, a defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams, is experiencing a significant personal and professional evolution, attributing his heightened focus and drive to becoming a new father and learning from veteran defensive end Myles Garrett.
Turner, who enjoyed a breakout season last year with 11 sacks, described the past offseason as the "greatest offseason of my life." The arrival of his daughter, Rowan Alma Turner, has provided him with a renewed sense of purpose and concentration. "It gives you a little bit more purpose. It gives you a little bit more reason and it also gives you a lot more focus too," Turner stated. This new perspective has influenced his approach to training camp, where he aims to maximize his time in the building to return home to his family.
Turner is also drawing inspiration and knowledge from Myles Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who is now alongside him in the Rams' defensive line meetings. Turner has observed Garrett's meticulous attention to detail and notes how the veteran craftsman focuses on fundamental pass-rushing techniques. "He pays a lot of attention [to detail]. I see him taking notes all the time," Turner said. He has been studying Garrett's efficient rushes, aiming to simplify his own approach by focusing on beating opponents off the snap and executing strong mechanics at the top of his rush.
Head coach Sean McVay has recognized Garrett's positive influence on the team, particularly within the defensive line room. "What a great teammate he’s been in terms of imparting wisdom," McVay commented. "It’s really cool just going into the meeting room and feeling the vibe in there… I’m incredibly impressed with the human as well."
Turner's development has also been compared to his earlier experiences learning from Aaron Donald. Now, as he trains alongside Garrett, he finds that his most significant transformation is occurring off the field, reinforcing his commitment to both his family and his football career. When not on the field, Turner has found joy in singing to his daughter, citing the Bee Gees' "How Deep Is Your Love" as a particular favorite that soothes her.
