Fantasy football managers are advised to look beyond flashy waiver wire pickups like Emmett Johnson and instead target players with a clear path to significant volume, such as Seth McGowan. As the NFL season progresses, injuries and bye weeks increase the value of running backs who consistently see touches.
Emmett Johnson, a rookie with the Kansas City Chiefs, recently gained attention for a 73-yard touchdown catch. However, his overall usage remains limited, with the player typically on the field for no more than 25 percent of offensive snaps. The Chiefs' backfield is primarily anchored by Kenneth Walker III, who functions as both the lead runner and receiver. Johnson's minimal workload makes his production unpredictable, positioning him as a high-tier handcuff to Walker rather than an immediate fantasy starter.
In contrast, Seth McGowan of the Indianapolis Colts presents a more compelling option for fantasy managers seeking consistent volume. With ongoing speculation about a potential trade for Jonathan Taylor, McGowan, who has established himself as the primary backup, is slated to assume the lead running back duties for the Colts once a deal is finalized. Although the Colts recently traded guard Quenton Nelson, raw volume often outweighs offensive line concerns in fantasy football.
McGowan's opportunity could begin as early as Week 9 against the Dallas Cowboys, whose defense has struggled against the run, allowing a league-high 152.8 rushing yards per game and 5.0 yards per carry. The Cowboys have also surrendered 10 rushing touchdowns this season.
At this stage of the fantasy season, sustained volume at the running back position is paramount. Managers should prioritize players projected to earn substantial snap counts and a high share of carries, even if their current starters are performing well. Given the frequency of injuries and backfield changes throughout the season, maintaining depth at running back is essential for fantasy success.
