A family member of an Argentina player was removed from their seating area during the World Cup final on Sunday after becoming involved in an altercation, according to reports. The incident occurred amidst violent scenes on the field that extended into the stands at MetLife Stadium shortly after Spain secured a 1-0 victory in extra time.
While initial reports from Colombian outlet Caracol suggested multiple arrests of relatives, the Daily Mail understands that one individual was removed from the stands. New Jersey State Police have not confirmed any arrests involving squad relatives.
FIFA is expected to investigate the behavior of Argentina's players. Midfielder Leandro Paredes was sent off after the final whistle for grabbing Spain's Eric Garcia by the neck and punching Gavi. Nahuel Molina also punched Rodri. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also reportedly seen landing a punch on Spain's Dani Olmo.
Argentina's Enzo Fernandez had previously received a second yellow card, leaving the team with 10 men in extra time before Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal for Spain. The team has faced criticism for their conduct following the loss, including standing with their backs to the celebrating Spanish team and some players declining to speak with the media afterward.
