The Atlanta Falcons have named Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the upcoming season. This decision comes as Michael Penix Jr. recovers from a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he sustained in Week 11 of the 2025 season against the Carolina Panthers. The team has opted against rushing Penix Jr.'s return.
Tagovailoa's appointment marks the sixth consecutive season the Falcons will feature a different starting quarterback for their opening game. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Tagovailoa is the latest in a line of quarterbacks to start Week 1 for Atlanta. Matt Ryan held the position in 2021, his final season with the team before joining the Indianapolis Colts. Marcus Mariota started in 2022, followed by Desmond Ridder in 2023. Kirk Cousins was the starter in 2024, and Penix Jr. began the 2025 season under center.
The 2026 offseason saw significant changes for the Falcons, including the firing of head coach Raheem Morris and the hiring of Kevin Stefanski, who was previously let go by the Cleveland Browns. Tagovailoa joined the Falcons after being released by the Miami Dolphins.
During the preseason, Stefanski expressed his desire for Tagovailoa to prove doubters wrong. "You want to prove people wrong," Stefanski said, according to the team's website. "You have a chip on your shoulder. I think where I'm coming into this, where Tua's coming into this is, listen, this is not exactly how you thought it would go, but guess what, that's the reality, and how are we gonna respond? I think that's what he's made of. You look at his career, you look back at his college career, he's responded."
Tagovailoa has faced challenges with availability throughout his career, playing at least 16 games in a season only once, in 2023. In that Pro Bowl season, he led the Dolphins to an 11-6 record and a postseason appearance. Last season, he recorded 2,660 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions in 14 games.
The Falcons will compete in the NFC South, a division that has seen varied success in recent years. The Carolina Panthers won the division last year with an 8-9 record. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the divisional champions from 2021 to 2024, and the New Orleans Saints held the title from 2017 to 2020. The Falcons' last division title was in 2016, the same year they last appeared in the Super Bowl.
Atlanta is scheduled to begin its season on Sunday on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
