Team Europe secured a 15-13 victory over the United States to reclaim the Solheim Cup, with the win punctuated by European legend Dame Laura Davies leading a chant mocking the U.S. team's decision to celebrate with beers a day before the event concluded.
The U.S. team, trailing 7-5 after the second day's morning foursomes, rallied in the afternoon fourball matches. Jennifer Kupcho and Lindy Duncan erased a 2-down deficit with four holes remaining in their match, with Kupcho sinking a 90-foot putt on the 17th hole and a lengthy birdie putt on the 18th to secure a full point. This comeback tied the overall score at 8-8 heading into Sunday's singles matches.
Following the day's play, the U.S. team's official X account shared photos of captain Angela Stanford bringing a case of beer onto the team bus. While players celebrated the late surge, the U.S. team's early revelry was not missed by their European counterparts.
On Sunday, Europe secured the necessary points in the singles matches to win the cup back. During their own team bus celebration, Hall of Famer Laura Davies reportedly initiated a chant of "We drink on Sunday, they drink on Saturday," directly referencing the Americans' earlier celebration.
Following the tournament, Stanford defended the U.S. team's actions, stating that she had no regrets about the Saturday night celebration. "The worst thing I could have done is go in there and be like, ‘OK, y’all, come off this high,’" Stanford said. "You don’t want to take away from those moments. We’re never going to see anything like that again."
With this victory in the Netherlands, Europe has now won or retained the Solheim Cup in four of the last five contests. The United States last won the cup on European soil in 2015.
