Victor Rojas, who serves as a play-by-play broadcaster for ESPN's college baseball coverage and as the head coach for Hastings College, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Rojas shared the news in a statement posted to X on Thursday.
"A week ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer," Rojas wrote. "Thanks to yearly checkups and PSA tests, we caught it early, which makes the prognosis good. The plan is surgery in the near future to remove the prostate, and then it’s back to getting healthy and ready for the season."
Rojas joined ESPN in 2022, calling games for various conferences, including the Big 12 conference tournament, regionals, and super regionals. He took over as head coach at Hastings College in 2025. Under his leadership, the Hastings Broncos baseball team improved its record from 9-33 in his debut season to 24-36, marking the program's highest win total since 2017. He also coached his son, Tyler, during his tenure.
Rojas comes from a baseball family; his father, Cookie Rojas, was a former MLB All-Star and manager who served as the third base coach for the Mets during their 2000 World Series run.
Rojas has had a long career in broadcasting and baseball operations. He began his broadcasting career in 2001 with the independent Newark Bears and later broadcast games for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Texas Rangers. He also worked for MLB Network before becoming the Angels' television play-by-play broadcaster in 2010. He briefly interviewed for the Los Angeles Angels' general manager position in 2020 before stepping down from his broadcast role in 2021 to focus on his family and their apparel company.
His experience also includes serving two years as president and general manager of the Frisco RoughRiders, the Double-A affiliate of the Rangers, and a stint as an assistant coach at Ottawa University Arizona prior to his role at Hastings College.
Rojas expressed gratitude for his support system, including his wife, Kimberly, a cancer survivor herself. "We’ve been knocked off course before, and it’s never stopped us yet," he stated. "We will continue to put our trust and faith in our Heavenly Father, who has carried us this far."
