ESPN commentator Chris Russo has strongly criticized New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo for performing a backflip at Fanatics Fest in New York City, calling the act "beyond stupid."
Russo's comments came on the Monday episode of ESPN's "First Take," where he expressed concern over Skattebo's decision to attempt the acrobatic maneuver just months after suffering a significant ankle injury.
"He had a terrible ankle injury last year and he's doing back flips at Fanatics fair?" Russo questioned. "I mean what are you doing? You got training camp coming up, don't do anything dumb like that. Take it easy in front of the fans on a platform. Oh my god did that drive me crazy."
Skattebo's 2025 season was cut short in Week 8 when he sustained a severe ankle dislocation during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He underwent surgery in October to repair the injury.
During the Fanatics Fest event, Skattebo attempted a backflip but over-rotated, resulting in an awkward landing. The incident drew criticism on social media, with fans expressing concern given his injury history.
Skattebo, however, downplayed the incident, blaming the "bouncy" floors for the mishap. Speaking on a panel at the event, he stated, "I'm just going to keep being me, and if they want to say I'm brain-dead, and I don't have no brain, then who cares, f— it."
Fellow "First Take" guest Jason McCourty lightheartedly compared Russo's reaction to trying to stop him from yelling, but also acknowledged the potential risk.
Despite the scare, Skattebo did not suffer any serious injuries during the backflip attempt. He is preparing for the upcoming season, aiming to improve on his rookie statistics of 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 101 carries.
