Former Tottenham forward Erik Lamela has been appointed kitman for Mexican club CF Monterrey, a move that allows him to be on the bench during matches despite lacking official coaching qualifications. Lamela, 34, retired last summer after a persistent hip injury concluded his playing career.
Following his retirement, Lamela had joined the coaching staff at Sevilla under Matias Almeyda. However, Almeyda departed Sevilla in March and subsequently took the head coaching position at CF Monterrey. Lamela has now followed Almeyda to the Mexican club.
Liga MX regulations require coaches to hold official certification from the Federation Mexican de Futbol. As Lamela does not meet these standards, he is unable to officially serve as a coach. The kitman role provides a workaround, enabling his presence on the sidelines. It is understood that Lamela is pursuing his UEFA Pro license and may be promoted to a coaching role once qualified.
Mention was made of CF Monterrey's goalkeeping coach, Fabian Donelli, being in a similar situation.
Lamela spent eight years at Tottenham, making 257 appearances and scoring 37 goals. He was an unused substitute in the 2019 Champions League final and won the Puskas Award in 2021 for a notable rabona goal against Arsenal.
