Enzo Fernandez has ignited controversy among Chelsea fans following his £125 million transfer to Manchester City, a deal that matches the British transfer record.

Fernandez expressed his long-held ambition to play for a club of Manchester City's stature. "I always dreamed of being at a club as big as City," Fernandez stated. "I'm grateful for the opportunity. It's a very emotional moment for me and my family, to take this step at 25 years old, in a football career that I always dreamed of."

His comments are likely to further anger Chelsea supporters, particularly as he referred to his former club solely as his "previous club." This follows a pattern set by new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca, who also avoided naming Chelsea directly after his own move, calling them a "different club."

Fernandez's transfer was confirmed on deadline day, and he expressed his eagerness to join the team and compete for trophies. "Manchester City have to win every trophy they compete for," he said. "In every competition we play in, we have to compete and win, because this club's history demands that."

He also highlighted the swiftness of the transfer once City expressed interest. "From the first day they believed in me and called me to say they wanted me to join the club, I didn't hesitate for a second," Fernandez added.

Fernandez also spoke about reuniting with Maresca, with whom he previously worked at his former club. "He is a top manager, honestly, I had him at my previous club. They were incredible moments. I learned so much with him," Fernandez said. "I'm also grateful because he was very important in bringing me here. So it's a huge pleasure for me to work alongside him and enjoy it."

Fernandez acknowledged the transfer process was not straightforward. "It was a long few days, but in the end I'm here and I'm very happy to be joining this club," he stated.

This latest episode adds to previous tensions between Fernandez and Chelsea fans. Last season, he drew their ire by expressing interest in a move to Real Madrid, which resulted in a two-match suspension from Chelsea.

In a social media message to Chelsea supporters prior to his move, Fernandez attempted to explain his departure. "Life is about making decisions, and right now I find myself having to make one of those difficult decisions. I've said it before, but I want to say it again: I have grown incredibly fond of this club. Chelsea will always have a place in my thoughts and, above all, in my heart," he wrote. "But I also understand how football works. I know how passionate you are, because I am the same. And if I were in your position, I would probably be thinking the same way."
