England international Ivan Toney has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm following an incident at a London nightclub in December, police confirmed Friday. The charge stems from an alleged assault that occurred in the Soho district of the city.
Authorities stated that Toney was formally charged on July 31. While police have not released further details regarding the incident, Toney's representative acknowledged the charge. A spokesperson for the player said Toney "acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court."
Toney, who currently plays for Al-Ahli in the Saudi Arabian league, is scheduled to appear in court on September 24. The 30-year-old forward was part of England's squad that secured third place in the recent FIFA World Cup.
