Emma Finucane has made Commonwealth Games history by becoming the first sprint cyclist to achieve four gold medals at a single Games. The Welsh star clinched her fourth gold in the keirin event, held at the Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

Finucane's latest triumph adds to her previous victories in the team sprint, individual sprint, and the 1,000m time trial. She achieved this remarkable feat over four consecutive days of competition. This accomplishment places her in elite company, surpassing previous records held by notable cyclists.

Prior to Finucane's achievement, Australian cyclist Aaron Gate had won four gold medals at the 2022 Birmingham Games, though his included one on the road. Anna Meares of Australia and New Zealand's Ellesse Andrews had each secured three track cycling titles at past Games.

Finucane's success also marks a significant milestone for Welsh athletics. The 23-year-old is now the first Welsh woman to win four gold medals at one Commonwealth Games, and Wales' most successful female athlete in the history of the Games. She has overtaken Para-sprinter Olivia Breen, who had held the record for a brief period. The most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete from Wales remains weightlifter David Morgan, who has accumulated nine gold medals and three silver.

Finucane's performance contributed to Wales' overall medal tally of 31 at the Games, which includes nine gold, 10 silver, and 12 bronze medals. Andrews, the Olympic champion, finished second in the keirin event, unable to defend her Commonwealth title.
