Switzerland's Breel Embolo was sent off for simulation in the 70th minute of the World Cup quarter-final against Argentina, a decision that left the striker in tears. The incident marked the first time a player has received a red card under a new VAR 'mistaken identity' rule.

Embolo, who had already received a yellow card earlier in the match, went down following a challenge from Argentina's Leandro Paredes. Initially, the referee, Joao Pinheiro, issued a yellow card to Paredes. However, VAR prompted a review under the 'mistaken identity' rule, which allows for decisions to be overturned if the original infringement was committed by an opposing player.

The review determined that Embolo had initiated contact with Paredes and subsequently simulated a foul, rather than being fouled. Referee Pinheiro reversed his decision, cautioning Embolo for simulation, which resulted in a second yellow card and an immediate red.

Switzerland players protested the decision, while Embolo was visibly upset and comforted by teammates as he left the field. The red card occurred shortly after Switzerland had equalized through Dan Ndoye, who scored after an exchange with Ricardo Rodriguez. Argentina had taken the lead in the 10th minute with a header from Alexis Mac Allister from a corner.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Switzerland managed to hold Argentina to force the match into extra time.
