Elliot Anderson is on the verge of becoming the second most expensive transfer in Premier League history with a £116 million move to Manchester City. The 23-year-old England international is set to complete his transfer from Nottingham Forest and will be the first signing of the post-Pep Guardiola era.

While the £116 million fee positions Anderson's transfer as the second largest in nominal terms, its historical ranking shifts significantly when adjusted for inflation. According to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, a list of Premier League transfers adjusted for inflation places Anderson's deal at 31st all-time.

The inflation-adjusted list is topped by Alan Shearer's £15 million transfer to Newcastle United in the 1996-97 season. This transfer, which held the league record for four years, is equivalent to approximately £236.9 million today. Manchester United features prominently in the inflation-adjusted top rankings with the transfers of Rio Ferdinand (£33.3 million in 2002-03, adjusted to £198.5 million) and Juan Sebastien Veron (£28.1 million in 2001-02, adjusted to £178.5 million).

Other notable transfers from earlier periods that rank highly when adjusted for inflation include Liverpool's £8.5 million signing of Stan Collymore in 1995 (adjusted to £176.8 million) and Chelsea's £50 million acquisition of Fernando Torres in 2010-11 (adjusted to £157.8 million).

More recent high-value transfers also feature on the inflation-adjusted list. Paul Pogba's £89.9 million move to Manchester United in 2016 is the only transfer from the last decade to appear in the top 10, adjusted to £141.6 million. Jack Grealish's £100 million transfer to Manchester City in 2021 ranks 14th, adjusted to £132.7 million. Alexander Isak's Premier League record transfer of £125 million to Liverpool is 15th, adjusted to £132.6 million, while Moises Caicedo's £115 million move to Chelsea is 17th. Enzo Fernandez's £106 million transfer to Chelsea in 2023 is ranked 20th, adjusted to £127.5 million, and Florian Wirtz's £116 million transfer to Liverpool last summer is adjusted to £123.1 million.

Declan Rice's £105 million move to Arsenal in 2023 is placed 27th on the list, adjusted to £119 million. Should Anderson's transfer to Manchester City be finalized, his £116 million fee would rank 31st, four places behind his England midfield partner.
