Portugal coach Roberto Martinez stated that the approaching anniversary of forward Diogo Jota's death can serve as a motivating factor for the team as they prepare for their World Cup clash against Croatia. The two nations are set to meet on July 2, exactly 364 days after Jota's fatal car accident.
Martinez acknowledged that the date would naturally evoke emotions but expressed confidence that his squad will draw inspiration from the occasion rather than succumbing to sadness. Speaking after Portugal secured second place in Group K with a 0-0 draw against Colombia, Martinez said, "I think every day is difficult. You are training and there are always moments when Diogo Jota comes into our memory. I wouldn't say the anniversary is especially difficult – it is a little bit of a celebration."
He added, "We need to honour Diogo. It is a moment to cherish." Martinez emphasized Jota's significance to the team, noting, "We won the Nations League with him, he is probably the sign and the light of the biggest stimulation we have. We want to win the World Cup for him." Martinez also suggested that the upcoming game should be considered "Diogo Jota's game," asserting, "It is not a difficult moment. When he is with us we are a stronger team. When we don't win a game, like tonight, we reference that his desire and his belief is always in our presence."
Martinez also addressed his decision to consistently play Cristiano Ronaldo, who has played every minute of Portugal's three games and scored twice against Uzbekistan. Despite a largely uninspired team performance against Colombia, Ronaldo's struggles against stronger defenses have raised questions about his continued starting role. "Cristiano is used to being in the right place at the right time. That is a question of mentally being strong and always being disciplined in his position and opening space for our attacking patterns," Martinez explained. "It is not an issue physically or mentally for Cristiano in today's game to play 90." However, he conceded, "Maybe next game we need to make a change (to Ronaldo's minutes on the pitch) but it is like any other player."
