The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed second baseman Ketel Marte on the restricted list for the second time in his career after he failed to report for Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox.
The team announced the roster move 15 minutes before first pitch, recalling Jose Fernandez from Triple-A Reno. Arizona reportedly delayed the announcement in the hope that Marte would arrive in time for the game.
Details regarding the reason for Marte's absence or how long he will be away from the team were not immediately available. Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reported that Marte is attending to a personal matter.
Marte's previous stint on the restricted list occurred in 2025, following a burglary at his Arizona home where he lost $400,000. That three-game absence, which came shortly after the All-Star Game and a prior request off for a Sunday game, reportedly caused some friction among his teammates.
Despite reports of lingering clubhouse grumblings, manager Torey Lovullo has previously refuted claims of discord, insisting there is no animosity within the team. Earlier this season, Marte cited lower back tightness for skipping a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Marte, an MVP finalist in 2024, has been a frequent subject of trade rumors, particularly given the Diamondbacks' status as sellers in 2025. This season, he is batting .249 with 21 home runs, 67 RBIs, and an .760 OPS for an Arizona team currently contending in the NL West. He is in the second year of a six-year, $105 million contract.
