The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed second baseman Ketel Marte on the injured list with left knee inflammation, a move that follows a bizarre no-show and a face-to-face meeting with team officials.
Marte, who did not appear for Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox despite traveling with the team, was initially placed on the restricted list as the Diamondbacks attempted to understand his absence. General Manager Mike Hazen described the situation as a "complete mystery" and "bizarre."
"I’m not gonna get into specifics,” Hazen said Thursday, according to MLB.com. “I feel like the conversation and meeting was productive. We discussed the last week. That, obviously, I’m not going to get into. He’ll talk to his teammates at some point and we’ll go from there.”
Marte and his agent met with manager Torey Lovullo and Hazen on Thursday. Following the meeting, Marte received an MRI that revealed inflammation in his left knee. He received an injection for the issue, and the team hopes he can return after the minimum 10 days on the injured list. His absence is backdated to Thursday, as players on the restricted list cannot be retroactively placed on the injured list.
Manager Torey Lovullo initially called Marte's situation a "personal issue" after speaking with him on Monday and receiving no clarity. The team did not finalize its lineup card until the last minute that day as they scrambled to find a replacement.
This is not the first time Marte's whereabouts have raised questions. After the 2025 All-Star Break, he did not attend the first three games, returning to the Dominican Republic following a robbery at his home. At the time, Marte described himself as "frustrated" and "in a bad spot."
However, Lovullo distinguished those previous absences, stating they were not considered no-shows. Despite Marte now being on the injured list with an official diagnosis, questions linger regarding the events leading up to his placement on the list.
