The New York Giants are looking to Devin Singletary, nicknamed "Motor," to carry the load at running back as injuries and roster changes have thinned the position group. With Cam Skattebo listed as doubtful due to a hamstring injury and Tyrone Tracy Jr. placed on injured reserve, Singletary is expected to be the primary ball carrier in Sunday's matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.
This opportunity comes as a significant shift for Singletary, who was a healthy scratch for three consecutive games on Oct. 11. "I just stayed positive because that’s who I am," Singletary said. "Do you want it to go down like this? No, but it’s the nature of the beast. I wouldn’t say (it was) frustrating. It’s how the game goes."
Singletary previously scored the game-winning overtime touchdown against the Texans in a situation where both Tracy and Skattebo were injured. Now, he faces the prospect of being the workhorse back, supporting newcomers Greg Derosiers and practice squad elevation Phil Mafah.
Singletary joined the Giants in 2024 as a response to losing Saquon Barkley to the Eagles. Despite being eventually surpassed by Tracy on the depth chart, Singletary accepted a pay cut to the veteran minimum to remain with the team for a third season. "I looked at it as, ‘We’ve been through these hard past two years, why would I leave when it’s about to get good? I want to be a part of this,’" Singletary stated.
While his recent workload has been limited, with a single-game high of 16 carries last season, Singletary has three career seasons with over 800 rushing yards and expressed confidence in his ability to handle a larger role with his "fresh" legs. "I know what I can do. I want to be able to display that," he said.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy praised Singletary's professionalism during his recent lack of playing time. "The discussions that we had in practice when he wasn’t playing, he never became negative, he never made it about him," Nagy commented. "He was as great of a professional player as there was – and look what happened."
Head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged making a mistake in demoting Singletary, a sentiment Singletary appreciated due to the coach's honesty. "One thing I respect about him is he kept it real with me," Singletary said. "In so many words, it was, ‘This is what it is right now. I need you to stay patient. We’ll see how it plays out.’"
The Giants’ upcoming opponent, the Eagles, rank 28th in the league in rushing defense. Running backs coach Willie Taggart expressed confidence in Singletary's readiness, stating, "You can put him in there, and not be nervous of him not knowing what to do."
