Officials have released new details concerning the death of former Super Bowl champion Jordan Devey. According to the Ada County Sheriff's Office, the ex-New England Patriots offensive lineman attempted suicide at his home in Boise, Idaho, on July 21.
First responders transported Devey to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The Ada County Coroner's Office officially ruled his cause of death as asphyxia by ligature hanging, with the manner of death listed as suicide. Devey was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 1:57 p.m. on July 22. He was 38 years old.
The incident is currently under investigation, and no foul play is suspected, authorities stated.
Devey's mother, Leslie, told Fox 13 in Salt Lake City that she believed her son may have suffered from CTE. Friends and family remembered Devey as a "devoted husband" and a "loving father" to his four children in a GoFundMe created to support his family.
Devey's wife, Linsey, announced his death last week, sharing that the date would have marked their 15th anniversary. She wrote of their shared memories, joys, struggles, and triumphs, and their four children, who have his eyes, freckles, and compassion. "You were our hero and our hearts ache in your absence," she wrote. "We love you. We miss you. And as you said in your last words to me, ‘we’ll talk soon.’"
Devey played in the NFL from 2014 to 2020, appearing with the Patriots, 49ers, Chiefs, Raiders, and Bills. He won a Super Bowl with New England during the 2014 season.
