Clint Dempsey, a former standout for the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team (USMNT), has identified notable similarities between the current 2026 squad and the team that achieved its best-ever World Cup finish in 1930. The 1930 USMNT reached the semifinals of the inaugural FIFA World Cup, an accomplishment no American team has surpassed since, though the squad did reach the quarterfinals in 2002.

Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, Dempsey pointed to specific parallels in the teams' early tournament performances. "It’s going to be a tall order to get to the semifinals like what we did in 1930, but there’s been some similarities in terms of Balogun getting a brace, back-to-back wins. The only time that was ever done was in the 1930s," Dempsey stated.

In the 1930 tournament, U.S. player Bert Patenaude scored a hat trick. In the current 2026 World Cup, Folarin Balogun matched a significant early milestone by scoring two goals in the USMNT's opening match against Paraguay.

The current USMNT has demonstrated a strong offensive performance in the early stages of the 2026 tournament. Entering a match against Türkiye, the team held commanding control of Group D with a significant goal differential. They scored six goals in their first two games, a notable increase from the three goals scored in the entire 2022 World Cup.

The team's performance has fueled optimism for a deep run in the tournament. Dempsey expressed his continued belief, stating, "I’m gonna keep dreaming. I’m gonna keep enjoying life and long may it continue as we get into these knockout rounds."

The USMNT is projected to advance to the Round of 32, where they are expected to face a challenging opponent. Dempsey's comments highlight a historical perspective on the team's potential, drawing confidence from past successes. The team's current form and the historical comparisons suggest a promising outlook for the USMNT in the ongoing World Cup.
