Spanish soccer player Dani Olmo has rejected an apology from Argentina's assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, following an altercation after Spain's World Cup final victory. Olmo accused Ayala of being untruthful about the incident, stating that Ayala's explanation of his actions undermined the sincerity of his apology.

Ayala confronted Olmo after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium, where Spain secured its second World Cup title. Olmo alleges that Ayala punched him in the throat, a claim Ayala has downplayed, describing it as a push and a reaction to something Olmo said.

"Someone who claims to be sorry, but justifies a punch by saying it was a response to a comment, probably isn’t sorry at all," Olmo told Catalan outlet Diari de Terrassa. "He’s lying because I didn’t say anything to him, so I don’t need him to apologize. What truly defines us isn’t the mistake, but the courage to own up to it."

Ayala initially became involved in a scuffle between Argentina's Nahuel Molina and Spain's Rodri. He then encountered Olmo.

"It was more of a push than anything else; it wasn’t a punch like they’re saying, and that’s it. It was a reaction to something he said, but that’s it," Ayala stated regarding the incident.

The World Cup final saw other instances of contentious behavior from the Argentina squad. Midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in separate altercations, grabbing Spain's Eric Garcia by the throat and throwing Gavi to the ground. Despite these incidents, Paredes acknowledged Spain as the "rightful winners."

Olmo was substituted out of the final match in the 75th minute. He watched from the sidelines as Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in extra time, leading Spain to a 1-0 victory.
