New Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has indicated that Cristiano Ronaldo could continue his international career, stating the veteran forward "will never be a problem for the national team."
Jesus, 71, who previously managed Ronaldo at Saudi club Al-Nassr where they won the Saudi Pro League, was appointed to lead the Portuguese national team following their exit in the Round of 16 at the most recent World Cup. Ronaldo, 41, had publicly suggested that the 2026 tournament would be his last World Cup, though he did not definitively close the door on his international future at the time.
During his unveiling, Jesus spoke about his positive working relationship with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr. "When I received the invitation from Jose Semedo (Al-Nassr CEO) and Cris(tiano Ronaldo), I only accepted this challenge to help Cris win titles in Saudi Arabia," Jesus said. "That was my purpose."
Addressing the possibility of Ronaldo continuing with the national team, Jesus emphasized a coach-player relationship based on merit and decision-making. "I haven't spoken to Cris yet. It (his involvement) will never be a problem for the national team or for me," he stated. "When I have to make a decision, I will speak to him. But not only with him, I will speak to everyone individually. ... As long as I understand how far he can go and how far I can go. It's the coach-player relationship. From there, the conversations will be easy."
Jesus added that he would call Ronaldo up to the squad if he is playing and meets the conditions he deems best for the national team. He also noted that he was not hesitant to substitute Ronaldo during their time at Al-Nassr, asserting his authority as coach. "We never confuse what he is, the player, and what I am, the coach, and the decisions I have to make."
Ronaldo himself expressed sadness after Portugal's World Cup exit, stating, "I gave it my all. I did my best, and I’m leaving with a clear conscience. It was my last World Cup, yes, but I’ll now have time to reflect and be with my family. I won’t be making any rash decisions."
