Orioles star Pete Alonso was denied what appeared to be a dramatic, go-ahead home run against the New York Yankees on Wednesday night after a controversial foul call stood upon replay review. The incident occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning of a tie game at Camden Yards.
Alonso, convinced he had hit his 30th home run of the season, watched the ball seemingly sail over the left field foul pole after connecting with a pitch from Yankees lefty Brent Headrick. He flipped his bat in celebration, anticipating a go-ahead run. However, home plate umpire Ryan Wills immediately ruled the hit foul.
Following a lengthy replay review, the initial call of foul was upheld. Alonso, visibly frustrated by the decision, was forced to continue his at-bat and ultimately struck out, leaving the game tied. He was seen exchanging words with Wills as he returned to the dugout but remained in the game.
Alonso had previously homered in the third inning off Will Warren. The Yankees appeared to benefit from the close call, which left many in the Orioles dugout and the stands questioning the final ruling.
