Maggie Gehring, a content creator for the Kansas alumni team JHX Hoops, required emergency room treatment for a severe facial injury sustained during a brawl that erupted after the team’s 64-59 victory over Wichita State’s AfterShocks in The Basketball Tournament (TBT). Gehring reported on social media that she spent the night in the ER for injuries that included a broken nose in multiple places with an open fracture, and a deviated and broken septum. She indicated that follow-up consultations with an ENT specialist and a plastic surgeon would be necessary to determine the full extent of her injuries.
Videos of the incident show the melee breaking out after WSU’s Marcus Keene pushed KU’s Jacob Hanna following the game. Hanna subsequently collided with Gehring, who was on the court. Reports indicate Gehring’s nose began bleeding from the impact.
The exact cause of the post-game altercation remains unclear, but it followed a second-quarter scuffle involving nine ejections. During that earlier incident, KU’s Mario Chalmers and WSU’s Rashard Kelly were involved in a rebound dispute. Several players from both teams were ejected for leaving the bench area during the ensuing chaos. The large number of ejections left both teams with only six available players for the second half of the game.
JHX Hoops is scheduled to play in the TBT bracket final on Wednesday against Kentucky’s alumni team. The Basketball Tournament is an annual U.S.-based, single-elimination tournament offering a $2 million cash prize.
