In a peculiar turn of events during a college soccer match, Louisville Cardinals forward McKalie Ball scored a goal after an opposing goalkeeper's clearance attempt struck her in the head and deflected into the net. The incident occurred in the 73rd minute of the game between No. 24 Louisville and No. 2 North Carolina.
North Carolina's goalkeeper, Peyton Trayer, was preparing to clear the ball downfield. As Trayer kicked the ball, Louisville's Ball, who was applying pressure, was struck in the head by the clearance. The ball then ricocheted into the unguarded net, tying the game at 2-2.
Ball fell to the ground after the impact and required attention from the training staff before being helped off the field. Despite the unusual and potentially painful manner of scoring, the goal counted.
North Carolina ultimately secured a 3-2 victory when Hope Munson scored in the 79th minute. The Tar Heels will proceed to the ACC tournament, while the NCAA women's soccer tournament begins later in November.
