Towson punter Owen Scheihing suffered a severe broken arm during the Tigers' 45-9 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. The injury occurred when Scheihing attempted to make a last-ditch tackle on South Carolina's Vicari Swain, who was returning a punt.
As Swain approached the end zone, Scheihing dove to make the tackle. Swain, in the process of scoring, leaped over Scheihing. During the jump, Swain's knee and leg collided with Scheihing's helmet, and Swain then landed heavily on the punter's torso. The combined impact caused Scheihing's arm to snap.
Play was stopped immediately as medical staff attended to the freshman specialist, who was visibly in pain on the field. Scheihing was placed on a medical cart and taken off the field. He was able to sit upright as he was driven from the stadium, which was described as an encouraging sign.
Following the game, Towson head coach Pete Shinnick provided an update, stating that the situation "didn't look good." Shinnick confirmed that Scheihing would undergo further evaluation upon the team's return to campus and would likely require a cast and miss an extended period of play.
The game itself was also briefly interrupted by a 74-minute weather delay due to torrential downpours early in the third quarter. Despite the delay and the offensive performance of South Carolina, which included 119 rushing yards from Sellers and 125 yards from Matt Fuller, Towson managed to score a touchdown in the third quarter. However, the Gamecocks ultimately secured a decisive 45-9 victory.
