Two separate women's college basketball games on Friday featured unusual blunders when players inadvertently scored for the opposing team. In both instances, players drove to the basket and made layups into the wrong hoop.
During a game between New Mexico State and Southern Utah, Aggies player Emma Christiano stole an inbounds pass and scored a layup with 20 seconds remaining, giving her team a perceived lead. However, the basket was for Southern Utah. The play occurred with New Mexico State trailing by one point, and the subsequent score extended Southern Utah's lead to three.
Despite the error, New Mexico State managed to win the game 64-63 after Stacy Chovino scored the final two baskets, including one into the correct hoop with two seconds left.
An hour earlier, in a game between Northwestern State and Arkansas, Northwestern State's Karma Wynn received a bounce pass under her own basket and scored on the wrong hoop. This mistake put her team, the Lady Demons, behind by six points. Northwestern State ultimately lost the game 89-59.
