Manchester City has initiated talks with Liverpool regarding a potential transfer for forward Cody Gakpo, just days before the summer transfer window closes.

Gakpo, 27, has reportedly communicated to Liverpool that should he depart the club, his preferred destination is Manchester City. Tottenham Hotspur has also shown interest in the player.

Liverpool has stated that they intend to secure two additional forward players before considering the departure of the Dutchman. The club also expects a substantial transfer fee, given Gakpo's contract extends until 2030 following a long-term extension signed last year. Liverpool is also nearing the completion of a £123 million deal for Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, who primarily plays on the left wing, a position often occupied by Gakpo.

Gakpo joined Liverpool in 2023 for £44 million and has since scored 51 goals in 182 appearances. He scored in Liverpool's opening match of the current season and provided an assist in their recent game against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester City is seeking a new wide player after selling Savio to Tottenham for £85 million. Given this transfer fee for a player considered less productive than Gakpo, and knowing the significant sum City received, Liverpool is expected to drive a hard bargain for a key first-team player. While Gakpo's effectiveness was noted as less impactful last season, he contributed 18 goals in all competitions during Liverpool's 2024-25 Premier League title-winning campaign.
