Coco Gauff has advanced to her first-ever Wimbledon semifinal, securing a comeback victory against her friend and former doubles partner Jessica Pegula on Centre Court. The win marks a significant milestone for Gauff, who had previously reached the fourth round at Wimbledon seven years ago as a 15-year-old.
After an error-strewn first set, in which Gauff struggled with her serve and committed numerous unforced errors, she found her form to defeat Pegula. "Honestly, it's pretty insane," Gauff said after the match. "Maybe a lot of people had me going out in the first or second round this tournament so I am happy to get into the semi-finals. This is the first time I walked on Centre Court and I didn't feel nervous."
The match saw a stark contrast in Gauff's performance between the sets. The first set was characterized by a high number of unforced errors from Gauff, who made 17 errors compared to Pegula's fewer winners and errors. Gauff's serve was particularly shaky, with multiple double faults contributing to an early break of serve by Pegula.
Turning the Match Around
Gauff managed to find her footing in the second set, saving early break points and beginning to convert her own opportunities. The crowd at Centre Court rallied behind her with chants of "Come on, Coco." Her ability to win close matches has been a notable aspect of her season, with 11 wins in 18 three-set matches. This tournament has seen her require three sets in all but her first-round match.
Commentators noted Gauff's resilience, with former Wimbledon doubles champion Pam Shriver remarking on the BBC that "she doesn't mind winning ugly." Gauff ultimately converted five of her break point opportunities, while Pegula managed to convert only three of her seven.
Securing the Victory
In the deciding third set, Gauff appeared more assured and aggressive. She broke Pegula's serve early and, despite Pegula fighting back to level the set, Gauff responded by breaking serve to love to regain the advantage. By the end of the match, Pegula appeared stunned by Gauff's resurgence. Gauff closed out the match, securing her place in the semifinals and keeping her hopes alive for a third Grand Slam title.
