Christian McCaffrey's recent absence from San Francisco 49ers practice due to "tightness" has fueled speculation that the situation may extend beyond a simple health concern. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported Monday that the star running back's reduced workload could be a "hold-in" tactic aimed at securing a contract adjustment.

The 49ers have stated that McCaffrey is experiencing tightness and that the team is proceeding with caution to prevent a minor issue from impacting his availability during the regular season. The specific body part affected has not been disclosed.

However, the timing of McCaffrey's situation coincides with a significant increase in running back salaries around the league. The Atlanta Falcons recently signed Bijan Robinson to a three-year, $75 million extension, including $51 million guaranteed. Shortly after, the Detroit Lions gave Jahmyr Gibbs a three-year, $67.5 million deal with $51.5 million guaranteed, establishing a new market average of $22.5 million annually for top running backs.

McCaffrey's current contract averages $19 million in new money. He signed a two-year, $38 million extension in 2024 and is under contract through the 2027 season. His recent performance, including leading the NFL with 413 touches in 2025 and amassing 2,126 yards from scrimmage, the second-most in franchise history, provides a strong basis for a renegotiation.

Florio also noted reports from last year suggesting McCaffrey was seeking a contract "sweetener" from San Francisco, which he did not receive. The current surge in running back compensation would further bolster his leverage.

There is also little incentive for McCaffrey to risk injury during preseason activities, especially after a season impacted by injuries in 2024. The 49ers have a vested interest in protecting their key player, while McCaffrey has his own reasons to avoid unnecessary risks before Week 1, particularly after carrying the heaviest workload in football last season.

This confluence of factors makes the situation complex. While the "tightness" may be precisely what the 49ers describe, Florio's theory suggests it could also be a strategic move by McCaffrey to highlight his value to the team.
