Chelsea has signed 17-year-old winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting CP, marking a significant acquisition for the Premier League club's future plans. Quenda, who has been compared to Arsenal's Bukayo Saka and has drawn early career comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo, joins Chelsea from the Portuguese academy where Ronaldo also began his ascent.
Quenda's development began at Benfica before he moved to Sporting's academy system in 2017. Former youth coach Fabio Roque described Quenda as an "incredible and different" player from a young age, noting his discipline was not always perfect but his attitude was excellent. "He was demanding of himself, confident, unpredictable, brave and had a great relationship with the ball," Roque told BBC Sport.
His talent was evident during a match against Benfica when, as a player for Sporting's under-10 team, he demonstrated remarkable composure and belief. After a difficult week for the team, which included a player being sent off, Quenda reassured his coach at halftime that they would win. He later scored the decisive goal, showcasing the "personality and belief" that led coaches to consider him special.
By the age of 16, Quenda was training with Ruben Amorim's first-team squad at Sporting. He soon began breaking records, becoming the youngest player to score in the Portuguese Super Cup with a debut goal against Porto. He also became Sporting's youngest player to start and score in the Champions League and surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo's record as the youngest goalscorer in Liga Portugal. By 17, he had established himself as a first-team regular.
Tiago Teixeira, who coached Quenda in the under-23s, highlighted his potential, stating that "everyone talked about him" and considered him one of the most talented players in the academy. Teixeira noted Quenda's ability with set-pieces, recounting a practice session where Quenda, after being playfully challenged, scored multiple free-kicks in a row. "OK, finished for me," Quenda reportedly said afterward.
While Quenda joins a lineage of prominent Sporting wingers like Ronaldo, Luis Figo, and Nani, Roque believes his playing style most closely resembles Arsenal's Bukayo Saka. "It's his explosiveness, his ability to play inside, protect the ball, his unpredictability and his creativity," Roque explained. He added that Quenda might even be stronger defensively than Saka at this stage, with his running, crossing, and final pass reminding Roque of the England international. Teixeira, however, noted that Quenda might be better when playing inside the pitch compared to Saka's more direct approach, calling him a "once-in-a-decade talent for an academy."
Roque holds high expectations for Quenda, ranking him among the best players in the world born in 2007, alongside talents like Lamine Yamal and Estevao. "My expectations are very high, but I know it is a long career," he said.
