Chelsea are reportedly exploring a potential transfer for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, according to reports. The 33-year-old Swiss international previously played under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso during their time at Bayer Leverkusen.
Xhaka, who moved to Sunderland for £13 million last summer and played a significant role in their Premier League survival, is understood to be open to reuniting with Alonso and joining a new project. He featured for Arsenal from 2016 to 2023 and has extensive Premier League experience.
Sunderland has stated that there has been no club-to-club contact regarding Xhaka and that the midfielder is not for sale. The club would not welcome any offers.
Xhaka's contract with Sunderland extends until 2028. Chelsea, looking to add experienced players to their squad, are evaluating midfield options. The club is mindful of Xhaka's age, as he will turn 34 in September, and would likely seek to avoid a substantial transfer fee.
In other transfer news, Chelsea's recent acquisition Marco Palestra is undergoing his medical ahead of a £50 million transfer from Atalanta. The club is also maintaining contact regarding Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix and is aware of interest from Como and Inter Milan in Trevoh Chalobah.
