Golfer Charley Hull has dismissed criticism leveled against her on social media after she pranked her caddie, Adam Woodward, with a fake scratch-off lottery ticket. Hull, preparing for the Women's British Open, told reporters that those with complaints about the incident should "loosen up."
The prank involved Hull giving Woodward a fake ticket that led him to believe he had won $100,000. According to Hull, Woodward reacted with extreme jubilation, celebrating as if he had won the money and even stating he would take the day off. He reportedly became sweaty and trembled before Hull revealed the ticket was not real.
"He thought it was funny after, he’s not uptight, like it’s a joke," Hull stated. "If people don’t like it they can lump it, do you know what I mean? I felt bad for (Woodward) but at the end of the day, I just got to have a good week and then at the end of the week I’ll buy him 100 scratch cards."
Hull acquired the fake scratch-off ticket in town on a Monday and presented it to Woodward the following Tuesday. She described his reaction in detail, recounting how he removed his hat and glasses in excitement and ran around the player's lounge announcing his supposed winnings. Hull admitted that Woodward nearly quit his job upon learning the truth.
Despite the controversy, Hull and Woodward are in contention at the Women's Open. After two rounds, Hull was tied for seventh place at 2-under par, four strokes behind the leader.
