A Champions League play-off match between Lyon and Fenerbahce concluded with a significant on-field altercation, triggered by former Arsenal player Matteo Guendouzi's conduct towards Lyon supporters. Fenerbahce secured their place in the Champions League league phase with a 2-1 victory at Lyon's Groupama Stadium.
As players departed the field, Guendouzi, who previously played for Lyon's rivals Marseille, appeared to taunt home fans. Footage emerged showing him gesturing towards the Lyon supporters. In response, a man identified by French newspaper L'Equipe as Lyon's goalkeeping coach, Antonio Ferreira, reportedly emerged from the tunnel and moved towards Guendouzi.
This confrontation quickly escalated into a large brawl involving players and staff from both Fenerbahce and Lyon. Security personnel were seen attempting to separate the individuals involved, with punches reportedly thrown in Ferreira's direction as he was restrained against a wall.
The match itself was described as tempestuous, with Guendouzi reportedly making provocative comments towards Lyon players when Fenerbahce took a 2-0 lead. At full-time, Lyon players reacted angrily, shoving Guendouzi before his teammates intervened. Guendouzi's actions continued as he walked off, allegedly taunting fans further.
Lyon's Corentin Tolisso commented on the incident, stating, "You have to stay humble in victory, go celebrate that with your team in the locker room. Well done, congratulations to them, but there's no real need to do that."
Guendouzi has a history of controversy. During his time at Arsenal, he was reportedly banished from the squad by Mikel Arteta in 2020 after grabbing Brighton's Neal Maupay by the throat. He never played for Arsenal again and moved to Hertha Berlin before joining Marseille. His career has also seen disciplinary issues prior to his move to Arsenal, including a dressing-room clash at Lorient that led to a three-month exclusion from the first team.
With this victory, Fenerbahce advances to the Champions League league phase draw, while Lyon drops into the Europa League following a 3-2 aggregate defeat. The draw for the league phase is scheduled for Thursday.
