The Boston Celtics have reportedly agreed to trade Jaylen Brown, the 2024 NBA Finals MVP, to the division rival Philadelphia 76ers in a blockbuster deal that has sent shockwaves through the league. In return, the Celtics are acquiring veteran forward Paul George along with two first-round and two second-round draft picks, according to ESPN's Shams Charania and The Athletic's Jay King.

Reports had indicated that Boston had been actively seeking to trade Brown in recent days. This move comes as a surprise to many fans, particularly given the age difference between the players involved: Brown is 29, while George is 36 and has a history of injuries, having played over 70 games in a season only once since the 2018-2019 season. George's performance over the last two years in Philadelphia saw him average 16.7 points per game, below his career average of 20.5.

Brown, conversely, was a key player for the Celtics last season, averaging 28.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while his All-Star teammate Jayson Tatum was recovering from a torn Achilles. The trade also occurred on a day when the Celtics reportedly finalized a three-year, $47.44 million deal with former New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson and a veteran's minimum contract with point guard Mike Conley.

Adding a layer of irony to the trade, Brown had recently criticized 76ers center Joel Embiid for perceived flopping. In a May livestream, Brown stated, "Flopping has ruined our game," and specifically mentioned Embiid, calling him "a great player, one of the best bigs in f kings basketball history, flops." This criticism came after the Celtics blew a 3-1 series lead to the 76ers in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs, a series where Embiid played a significant role.

The trade brings an end to a period of speculation surrounding Brown's future in Boston, as his name had surfaced in numerous trade rumors in recent weeks. Joel Embiid was recently called out for flopping by Jaylen Brown
