Carlos Beltran confirmed on Monday that he held discussions with members of the New York Mets organization regarding their vacant managerial position following the dismissal of Carlos Mendoza. Beltran, who is currently serving as an advisor for the Mets, had previously managed the team for two months after the 2019 season before parting ways amidst the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal.
"Yes, I had conversations with a few people within the organization. And, I don’t know, I just didn’t feel it was the right thing for me to do," Beltran told reporters.
While Beltran stated that managing remains on his "bucket list," he expressed satisfaction with his current role, working alongside the Mets' decision-makers. He indicated that he needs to "think deeply about what my next step is gonna be."
The Mets fired Mendoza last month after the team's 34-47 start to the season and appointed Andy Green as interim manager. Beltran spoke highly of Mendoza, stating, "I have to tell you that the respect that I had for Carlos Mendoza when Carlos was part of the Mets is super top. Carlos is a great human being."
Beltran added that he enjoyed being around Mendoza and wanted to support him by sharing his experiences with clubhouse dynamics and player relations.
