Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning US Open champion, inadvertently became a center of attention for reasons beyond his on-court performance during his third-round match on Friday. After defeating China's Wu Yibing, the Spanish tennis player removed his sweat-soaked shirt, revealing his physique and causing a stir among fans seated courtside.
A group of women near Alcaraz's bench were observed reacting with visible excitement, with some quickly taking out their phones to capture the moment. One fan was seen letting out an "involuntary scream in excitement" as she documented the scene. Alcaraz, aware of the attention, appeared to take his time while drying himself with a towel, allowing his abs to be exposed.
The Spaniard's attire had previously drawn commentary. His baggy sleeveless top had on occasion revealed a nipple during matches, prompting former player Genie Bouchard to remark on social media, "Love you Carlos but we've got to put the nip away." To address this, Alcaraz wore a skin-tight vest underneath his shirt for the match against Wu Yibing.
Alcaraz, 23, who is defending his title after a four-month layoff due to a wrist injury, expressed surprise at his current form. "I think today was a really high rhythm, the way he played was unbelievable," Alcaraz said of his opponent. "I played aggressive, I played smart in the toughest moments which I'm really happy about. I did everything good. Could be better, but I'm proud of the performance today."
He added, "To be honest I'm better than I thought. I thought I would be dead after the first match, but I'm recovering really well. Right now my level is really good."
Following his win, Alcaraz addressed the outfit change, stating, "Well, I think I saw my nipple too much lately. I felt like, you know, I could hide it for at least one match. I feel really comfortable with another shirt so I think I'm going to stay like that." He confirmed the decision was his and that he would not mind playing shirtless again if necessary.
Alcaraz's next opponent in the fourth round will be American Tommy Paul. "He's going to play at home which is going to be an advantage for him," Alcaraz commented. "But hopefully he will be a bit tired from today's match."
