Caitlin Clark was issued a technical foul for taunting Connecticut Sun player Saniya Rivers during the Indiana Fever's dominant 123-88 win on Wednesday night. The incident occurred near the end of the third quarter when Rivers was penalized for grabbing Clark while she was dribbling.
As cameras focused on the exchange, Clark was seen and heard repeatedly saying "scoreboard" to Rivers and gesturing towards the game's score, with the Fever holding a commanding 28-point lead at 95-67. This taunt resulted in Clark's seventh technical foul of the season, placing her one away from a one-game suspension.
Clark acknowledged the incident post-game, stating, "She said she was locking me up, so I said 'scoreboard' and the ref didn’t like that." She added, "I'm never going to back down. It's trying to control your emotions as best you can. That intensity and that fire is what makes me, me. But it's also knowing my team needs me and I finding a good balance of that. I don't think I am going to be playing with that in the back of my head, I think that will hinder my play a little bit."
Indiana Fever coach Stephanie White expressed confidence in Clark's awareness of her foul situation. "She knows. She has awareness about it," White told reporters. "We'll try to help her when we can, but sometimes we can’t. If she wants to be strategic about which game she doesn't want to play then she'll let her fly."
The victory marked a strong performance for Clark, who has been regaining her top form after a recent back issue. She contributed 27 points in 27 minutes, helping the Fever improve their season record to 17-10. The team is set to face the Seattle Storm on July 28, following a break for the WNBA All-Star game.
"I thought we shared the ball really well. We played up tempo, and everybody had one of those nights where the ball was going through the hoop," Clark said about the team's win. She indicated that the All-Star break might interrupt the team's current momentum, stating, "I like Chicago, it's a cool city. But I'll be excited to get back here with my team too and keep this rolling. I feel like we're playing really good basketball right now."
