Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made a 69-yard field goal against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during a preseason game on August 22, 2026. The kick, which could have been good from further, gave the Chiefs a 9-0 lead heading into halftime. If the kick had occurred in the regular season, it would have set a new NFL record for the longest field goal, surpassing the 68-yard mark set by Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Cam Little in November 2025.
Butker also holds the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history, a 57-yarder against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. However, despite the success of the 69-yard kick, Butker was critical of his performance in the Chiefs' 16-15 preseason loss to the Buccaneers.
He missed an extra point attempt and a 43-yard potential game-winning field goal late in the game. "You've got to make your kicks. Miss an extra point, miss a game-winner. That's what I care about, not the 69-yarder or whatever it was," Butker stated after the game. "I feel like throughout my career when I've had big kicks, it's been a struggle to finish the game or the next game. I feel like mentally I was good on that 43-yarder. It felt good off my foot. Maybe I need some more caffeine for the second half or something."
An initial extra-point try following an Emmett Johnson touchdown was nullified by a Chiefs penalty, and the subsequent re-try hit the upright. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid acknowledged Butker's missed opportunities, saying, "Butker, until the last field goal, had a heck of a day. But he'll be the first to tell you that's the one he'll remember. He'll learn from it and move on. He's made enough of those big ones for us that we know what he can do."
The Chiefs concluded their preseason schedule with a game against the Seattle Seahawks on Friday night.
