The brother of six-time NFL Pro-Bowl star Calais Campbell has been arrested and charged with murder after their mother was found dead inside her Atlanta home.
Nateal Campbell, 71, was pronounced deceased inside her townhouse in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta on Tuesday afternoon. Police arrived to perform a welfare check after receiving concerns from relatives.
Officers attempting to enter the property found that a male had barricaded himself inside. They eventually gained entry and detained Ciarre Campbell, 41, the son of the deceased. Jail records indicate he faces charges of two counts of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit a felony.
Ciarre Campbell is a former college football player who did not make it to the NFL. His brother, Calais Campbell, is preparing for his 19th season in the league after signing a one-year, $5.5 million deal with the Baltimore Ravens. Calais Campbell previously played for Arizona, Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Miami and was named the Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2019. He was also a member of the 2010s All-Decade Team.
The Campbell family released a statement acknowledging the loss of their matriarch. "While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ," the statement read. "We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family."
Atlanta Police officials confirmed that officers were called to the property on Roswell Road shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Lieutenant Christopher Butler told WSB-TV that a review of records showed officers had responded to the same address in April for a possible mental health issue involving Ciarre Campbell, and a possible arson incident.
